An article "enroute to Leeds" at the start of the journey, long, long time ago.
En Route to Leeds
The First Independence Day
The First Independence Day, like the First Christmas, is a historic event, happening only once, never to be repeated, only reenacted. Those who had experienced the emotions and the pomp on that day, when India, for the first time, breathed as a Free Nation -- strangers embracing others on the street, distributing sweets, amidst the sounds of church bells and firecrackers, enjoying the feast-to-the-eye illuminations -- will have the memories etched in stone. To me and a few others, it became even more epoch-making in that the observance stretched, in a way, for nearly a month.
Although I received the Government of India overseas scholarship in July 1945, the bureaucrats took their own time and finalized the admission at Leeds University and arranged the passage only in June 1947, and consequently, I left on 18 August 1947, on the P&O liner, S.S. Strathmore, still in the troopship configuration, the first ship to set sail from Free India, carrying, among others, a few hundred Indians, mostly students, the proud lot of the first set of Free Indians to leave the shores of India. The ‘Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme 2007-08’ gave me an opportunity to study a full-time MSc degree in ‘Biosciences with Human Genetics’ at University of Leeds, UK. The funding received from this scholarship allowed me to complete this degree successfully without worrying about financial matters and I must confess that this 1-year experience in Leeds has changed my whole life in an extremely good manner. In fact, at the end of the program the Faculty of Biological Sciences at Leeds University awarded me with the, ‘Best Student Prize Award’ for securing highest marks in the class as well as ranking number one in the year group 2007-08 during my M.Sc. degree.
Almost every aspect of this MSc course was enjoyable. However, the MSc research project, technique-based data analysis assignments and bioscience practicals carried out as a mini-project were especially enjoyable. These tasks provided me with an opportunity to experience many contemporary techniques being used in the field of biological research. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working with some of the techniques like electron microscopy, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, sequencing, mass spectrometry etc. of which I dreamt of as an undergraduate. For me, a major highlight of this course has been the rigorous training that I received in scientific communication as well as scientific research. The assignments like those involving reviews, presentations & research papers allowed me to get acquainted with the exact technique of how scientific publishing and communication is done and peer-reviewed. The research that I did helped me in understanding how to tackle and plan research projects. And last, but not the least, the highly experienced staff was another highlight. All through this programme, I got valuable opportunities to interact with researchers who have done advanced research in their own areas of specialization. Read More |

My degree helped me a 100% to get this job as I was headhunted whilst pursuing my master’s project in the virology lab! I really love the challenges of my new career- there's so much going on; undertaking hands on wet lab work; learning new techniques; the freedom to brainstorm; the combination of academic and industrial work experience; becoming more aware about company investments; delivering to set targets; liaising with other sections of the company based elsewhere in England. I'm thoroughly enjoying my current job and hope to start my PhD soon. The MSc wasn't easy, but it certainly taught me how to multi-task and to produce quality work. My advice to other students would be "come and experience Bioscience at Leeds - its well worth it!" |

I am Balasubramanyam Maddu from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. I did my MSc (Eng) at University of Leeds. Leeds University is like a dream come true for me. I would like to thank my parents for this. I can still recollect Great hall, Brotherton library which are like the maharaja palaces in India.
What I can say about education in Leeds is purely hard work. We don't need to be intelligent, go to lectures, do assignments and you get what you want.
I used to stay in St Marks which is calm. Professors are very helpful and your hard work is always recognized. I had great time at International Student Club which is the best where you can meet International students where I made good friends for life.
I used to work part time in Burger King at Leeds City Center which is 20 min walk from University. But due to course work and first semester results I had to leave it in Feb.
During project time we used to work 20 hours a day but for sure you will enjoy it.
I would like to add few more comments from my personal experience. If you want to work in UK try to plan about it from the first day. I started my job on 1st April at Orange as a Telecom Engineer with my IGS visa. I will say UK has got plenty of opportunities but we have to search.
Finally I would say Leeds University will always take you to greater heights. It is the best. My email id is balasubramanyam.maddu@gmail.com |

Mirra says……….
I decided to come to the University of Leeds because it is one of
the premier League Universities of the UK. It has got 5* research
rating for Engineering subjects and many others. It also has a
very strong international student population and a highly active
student union which holds some great events through various
societies.
The teaching is of a very high standard and as a university it is
over 100 years old. Leeds is amongst the best in sports and other
extra-curricular activities as well. The Student Union has
hundreds of different societies you could be part of; ranging from
salsa and break dancing to sky diving and water sports.
Leeds as a
city is called the London of the North and is soon becoming the
e-capital of the UK. All this meant great exposure as well as work
opportunities.
My experience
at Leeds has been very colorful and eventful throughout. The
professors here are keen to help whenever you need them and the
teaching system itself challenges the student to think
independently and out of the box. My final year project in
Nanoscience gave me the opportunity to work in a Research
programme funded by the EU and partnered by Cambridge University.
I thoroughly enjoyed working with cutting edge technology in this
field. At the end of the year, I was awarded the Best Student in
Communications Engineering.
It was not always all study for me though. I also choreographed
Bollywood dance shows at the university which always had a great
turnout. There was never one moment in the University life that
you didn't have a plan.
My advice to
prospective international students coming to Leeds would be to
come with an open mind ready to learn and absorb different
cultures and societies. That is the only way you would be able to
enjoy and appreciate a true international student experience. |

Astha Agarwal
B.Engg in Electronics and Communications Engineering
Astha Says:
I have recently been recruited as a ‘Graduate Hardware Engineer’ at Pace Micro Technology and I believe that it is largely through my involvement with the ICLP programme (the University’s summer placement scheme) and other opportunities offered through the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering that I have secured such a great job.
I chose Leeds because of its strong reputation in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Apart from the fact that the School has one of the highest rated research assessments in the UK, the School and University were personally recommended to me by people in the industry in my home country, India. Leeds also has an office in India, which proved to be very helpful.
Whilst studying at Leeds I joined the University’s ICLP programme. This is essentially collaboration between the University of Leeds and a range of internationally based companies, where students work on ‘real’ company projects and undertake one or two 10-12 week placements during the summer holidays. As well as being given the opportunity to set myself apart from other graduate entering the job market, I was paid whilst undertaking the placement and also received some financial sponsorship throughout my course. Through this scheme I undertook a placement with Yorkshire based Pace Micro Technology (PACE). PACE is one the word’s largest dedicated developer of digital TV set set-top box technology and the only company to design digital TV set-top boxes for all broadcast platforms, be it Cable, Satellite, Terrestrial or Digital Broadband Media (IPTV).
I really enjoyed my placement; it gave me an excellent opportunity to get ‘real’ hands on experience and put the theory into practice. I also based my final year project, for which I won a prize for ‘the best undergraduate project in telecommunication’, on the work I was doing at PACE. The project basically involved developing a more cost effective channel interferer to test the set-top boxes. Before I began the placement and the project, PACE was using a testing kit to create signals that cost around £12,000. The channel interfere which was developed for this project cut the cost down to only £100 which was a great achievement.
To sum it all up, my time at Leeds was great, I got a very good degree from a university that is very well respected by employers, it has helped me begin my career with PACE and given me the opportunity to have so much fun and make so many friends. So my advice to you is that when you come to Leeds, make the most of it, join in, get involved and take advantage of all these opportunities, they’ve certainly got where I am today. |

No talk of studying abroad would be complete without a mention about how one can enjoy being a student. Apart from making friends from around the globe, there are too many things to do and see as England is full of places which we all grew up reading about. As for Leeds, it is home to Leeds United and is just a few minutes away from Yorkshire dales, where the Bronte Sisters lived. Not to forget the annual Leeds Music festival, which is a must go. It requires a good deal of planning though, as the timing clashes with the submission of the study paper. And the wild Yorkshire folks promise loads of fun. Which is why it is a good idea to live in a hall at the Uni. I was at the James Baillie Park and I must confess I am really happy that I did not opt for private accommodation.
Also, Leeds is the third largest city in the UK and it being a student city, it makes living really easy and exciting for international students. The best part is that it has wonderful shopping places. The lovely individual stores near Hyde Park and in and around Victoria Quarter have some amazing stuff if you are looking for European chic accessories and clothes. It also has a small temple and Gurudwara to help one overcome the initial phase when one is bound to be home sick and helped me make friends from the Indian fraternity. I also happened to meet some people I knew from back home who were working out there. It goes without saying that Leeds has ample options for pub hopping and Vue cinema out here shows Indian films.
Geographically too, it is not far off from very many student hotspots and traveling around England and Europe is not a major problem as it is well-connected by rail and air. So, go studying and enjoy!

My experience
tells me that the University is certainly a treasure chest of networks
with future leaders and managers across the world giving us
opportunities every moment we spend there to be friend and work with
them.
I got a job as a strategy consultant in London through an alumnus of
Leeds University Business School whom I kept in touch with from the
beginning of my MBA days.
Leeds University was truly a stepping stone to the work life I am
enjoying now. Apart from the business skills I learnt in the class
rooms, it was easy to familiarise with many new cultures, specially
the hidden rules of the English decorum, which is helping me at work
even today. What gets us to go on here is the people skills more than
just the business skills.
Stay at Leeds was truly wonderful, as I cannot remember a lazy day
spent at the University. Every day came
with a new start, learning new things, meeting new people,
experiencing new weather and food.
The course itself was very dynamic and I was able to pay particular
attention to my team working skills in a challengingly diverse working
environment. We particularly enjoyed the competitions which helped us
hone our presentation and communication skills. On the whole, it’s an
experience no deserving aspirant should miss! |

“Job opportunities
after MBA from LUBS are amazing. The Career Center is heaven for
Indian students. They train you in all aspects of job hunting like CV
preparation, written tests, and mock interviews. They have amazing
data of employment details of all the top companies, videos of GDs
and interviews etc. from around the world. It’s due to their help
support I could make a solid entrance into Cummins UK, later on I was
transferred to Dubai and now in India.
The Life at Leeds
is too good. I made global friends and did not feel like leaving the
city. Part time job is very easy to get, I worked in McDonald and made
enough money to pay for rent, food and party on the weekends! I had
the opportunity to travel to York. It is a great place where I went
hiking with my MBA classmates to Lake District.
The faculty is very
impressive, great student and you always get 100 views representing
the entire globe for any point you make... that’s globalization! The
University also has a fantastic library
that provides you with every book available in Management.
University of Leeds is an excellent balance of education and
pleasure.”

My year as a
British Chevening scholar from Calcutta, India at the University of
Leeds was an enriching and eventful one. I was studying for a Master’s
degree in Communications Studies at the Institute of Communications
Studies and by the end of the academic session in 2002, I felt that I
had grown, not just intellectually and academically but as a person
with many wonderful friends and acquaintances, many of whom I have
kept in touch with.
Regarding the buildings of my University, it was a blend of the old
red- brick buildings and the modern, futuristic style and I must admit
that I preferred the grandeur of the former. In the first week of
arrival I had got lost many times and I had met many fellow students
who had faced the same problem. It was as if I was in a maze. I
gradually got used to the plan of the Uni buildings but it did take me
a while. The lecture theatre, housed in the Roger Stevens building,
was comfortable and equipped with modern facilities and we benefited
from the multi-media presentations and the slide projections by our
tutors. It made the lessons visually interesting.
With regards to
accommodation, I stayed in self-catering University flats, both in the
first two terms as well as during summer. I found them to be
convenient, having all the basic amenities that a student might need.
I stayed in the student area of Headingley. I visited London a couple
of times and every time I traveled by the National Express that was
economical and reliable though it took about 4 hours. Since I was
never in a hurry this mode of transport suited me just fine and I saw
a great deal of the beautiful, sylvan English countryside. Initially
the famed (!) Yorkshire accent left me quite speechless but I got used
to it as I did the fickle climes of Leeds. It was after all a part of
the wonderful Northern experience! I would strongly recommend to
future scholars the trip to Bamburgh Castle and Farne Islands, off the
rugged coast of Northumberland. Also the trip to Haworth, near
Keighley is a must for all Bronte enthusiasts.
Now for some
general comments- though I didn’t try Indian food often, ’cos of my
passion for Continental food, considering myself to be a fish-n-chips
person, a wide variety of Indian food and ingredients were available
in markets near Hyde Park such as Abu Bakkar. It’s no wonder that the
curry rules Britain! The locals were a friendly people especially if
you were supporting the same footie teams as they were; many of the
locals in Original Oak would come up and start a conversation that
felt really good. The pubs in Headingley were wonderful and cosy
places to spend a cold evening with friends, merely to unwind from the
rigours of the day.
I’m afraid the
weather was a bit trying and I never knew how it would turn out. More
than the cold and the rain, it was the wind that got to me. I was
often so nearly swept off my feet and dashed against the dry stone-
walls!
All in all I had the most wonderful time in Leeds and I have only the
fondest and warmest memories of the country and its people. I do look
forward to revisiting England someday soon.
The India Office is a pro-active office with approachable and friendly
people who are always there to assist Indian students. I particularly
enjoyed participating in the pre-departure briefing held last year.

“I have always been
interested in science especially Biology, even at high school, so it
was a natural progression for me to carry on my interest at
undergraduate level and subsequently master degree. My parents
encouraged me to pursue my academic interests to study a subject I was
interested in and then look to get a job in a related field. They have
never put any pressure n me to work in business. My mother is a doctor
so some of my interest in Biology comes from her. Ideally I would have
liked to study Genetics as my first degree but there were very few
Universities in India that offered this subject so I chose a broader
based degree in Zoology, with one module in Genetics.
I decided to come
to Leeds to study for my master so that I could specialise in
Genetics. I was particularly impressed by the quality of education in
the UK
and the fact that my masters will only take one year compared to 2
years in the US.
I had been to UK
before on holiday and my father had lived in the UK for 7 years so I
had some idea of what life in the UK would be like. A lot of my
friends chose to study in the US
but I wanted to break away and gain a truly international experience
in the UK.
I really enjoyed my
time in Leeds I have made a lot of international friends. In my class
there are 2 Greek students, my self and 6 UK students. I share a flat
with 2 Singaporean and 2 Greek friends. It had taken a while to adjust
to the different teaching and assessment methods in the UK and my
background knowledge of Genetics was not as good as my fellow
students, but I just had to spend more time in library and work harder
to catch up.”

The Mechanical department of the University is one of the best in the
country. With its 5* research status supported by a reputed faculty,
