Bar Council launches first Bar Placement Week in partnership with

The initiative, aimed at high achieving students from disadvantaged backgrounds allowed them to gain valuable practical experience.
 
This was the first time the event took place in Leeds, which ran the week commencing 17th Febraury. This was in collaboration with the Pathways's the Law programme at the Universities of Leeds and Manchester.  
 
The students involved, learnt how to structure a line of argument like a barrister with training from the Advocacy Training Council as well having the opportunity to visit Leeds Crown Court.
 
An essay competition also featured in the programme, with prizes awarded for the most interesting and entertaining accounts of the experience.
 
Local MPs, the Rt Hon Ed Balls, Shadow Chancellor, and Rachel Reeves, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, attended on the final day to show their support and award the prize winners.
 
Herabans Kaur, Pathways to Law Coordinator at Leeds, is quoted: "The students are looking forward to the chance to learn about the Bar. Gaining valuable hands on experience for personal and professional development is a dream come true to them. Identifying students for the placement has been an extremely competitive process due to the overwhelming popularity of the Week. We are grateful to the Bar Council for all their help and support."

Four University of Leeds alumni are part of the TeamGB squad in the Olympic Games which is carrying the hopes of the nation on its shoulders.
